Resume For Internship In 2026: Format, Examples, And Free Template

A practical, India-first guide to writing an internship resume when you have no work experience yet — the exact one-page format, what goes in every block, and copy-and-adapt example bullets for engineering, data, marketing and design internships.

How do I write a resume for an internship with no experience?

Use a one-page reverse-chronological resume led by Education, then Projects, Skills, Positions of Responsibility, Certifications and Achievements. With no jobs yet, projects and coursework are your experience: write each as a result-first bullet with tools and numbers, and mirror keywords from the internship JD so ATS parsers read you correctly.

What To Learn And How To Practice

Why internship resumes are read differently

An internship resume is not a shrunken job resume — it is an evidence document for someone who has not been paid to do the work yet. Recruiters at services companies, GCCs and startups already know you have no full-time experience; they are scanning for three things: can you actually build or analyse something, will you show up and finish, and do you fit this particular team's stack. That is why the ordering flips. Education moves to the top because branch, CGPA and graduation year are hard filters for campus and off-campus internship pools. Projects move above everything else because they are your only proof of hands-on ability. Positions of responsibility — fest coordinator, club secretary, NSS volunteer lead — stop being decoration and start doing real work, because they show ownership when nobody was grading you. Once you accept that framing, the blank page stops being scary. You are not hiding a gap; you are choosing which pieces of existing evidence best match the internship in front of you.

Branch, college and graduation year are hard filters — keep them in the top third.
Projects are your experience section until you have a real internship.
PORs prove ownership: 'Led a 12-member logistics team for a 3-day fest (~2,000 footfall).'
One page. Two pages at internship level reads as padding, not depth.

The one-page internship resume format that works

Use a reverse-chronological, single-column layout on one page. The order that works for almost every Indian student is: Header, Objective, Education, Projects, Skills, Internships or Training if you have any, Positions of Responsibility, Certifications, Achievements. If you already have one internship or a serious freelance stint, move that block above Projects — real work always outranks coursework. Keep the header to two lines: name in 14-16pt, then phone with the +91 country code, a plain firstname.lastname@gmail.com address, and LinkedIn plus GitHub or Behance links. City and state are enough; nobody needs your full postal address. Use 0.5-0.75 inch margins, a 10-11pt readable font, and consistent spacing between blocks — visual noise costs you more than a missing section. The 2-3 line objective sits directly under the header, and it is worth writing last, once the rest of the page tells you what your strongest proof actually is. This is the same skeleton as a standard fresher resume format, with projects weighted heavier.

Order: Header → Objective → Education → Projects → Skills → PORs → Certifications → Achievements.
Header: 'Ananya Rao | +91 98XXX XXXXX | ananya.rao@gmail.com | linkedin.com/in/ananyarao | github.com/ananyarao | Pune'
Single column, 0.5-0.75in margins, 10-11pt font, no photo, no borders, no icons.
File name: Ananya_Rao_Data_Analyst_Intern.pdf — PDF unless the portal demands .docx.

Section by section: what actually goes in each block

Education: degree, branch, institute, CGPA or percentage, and expected graduation year on one line. Add a 'Relevant Coursework' line only when it matches the internship. Class 12 and 10 marks get one compact line each, and past second year they can go entirely. Projects: pick two or three, most relevant first, each with a one-line context and two or three bullets. Every bullet starts with a verb, names the tools, and ends with an outcome — a number, a comparison, or a working link. Skills: group them so a recruiter can scan (Languages, Libraries, Tools) and list only what survives a ten-minute quiz. Positions of Responsibility: state scope, not the title alone — team size, budget, event footfall. Certifications: three relevant ones with issuer and year, not eleven. Achievements: rank plus pool size. Finally, delete the biodata leftovers Indian templates still carry — photo, date of birth, father's name, marital status, and the signed Declaration block.

Education: 'B.Tech, Electronics & Communication — NIT Warangal | CGPA 8.2/10 | Expected May 2027'
Coursework: 'Relevant coursework: DBMS, Operating Systems, Probability & Statistics, Machine Learning'
Skills, grouped: 'Languages: Python, SQL, C++ | Libraries: pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn | Tools: Git, Power BI, Excel'
Achievement with scale: 'Finalist, Smart India Hackathon internal round — top 5 of 62 teams'

Worked example bullets for four internship tracks

The fastest upgrade to any internship resume is rewriting flat task statements into result-first bullets. Weak: 'Made a website using HTML and CSS.' Strong: 'Built and deployed a 5-page college fest site (HTML, CSS, vanilla JS) that handled 1,200 registrations over three days.' The formula is simple: action verb + what you built + tools + scale or result. Numbers do not have to be impressive; they have to be true and specific. Rows of data, team size, users, footfall, hours saved, percentage improvement — all fair game. If a project genuinely has no number, use scope instead: 'across 4 modules', 'for 3 hostel blocks'. Match the verb to the discipline too: engineers build, deploy, debug and optimise; analysts analyse, model and visualise; marketers write, run, test and grow; mechanical students design, simulate, fabricate and test. Below are copy-and-adapt bullets for four common internship tracks. Take the shape, swap in your own honest details, and never keep a number you cannot defend in an interview.

Data analyst intern: 'Analysed a 120k-row public e-commerce dataset in Python and SQL; built a Power BI dashboard highlighting the 4 lowest-margin product categories.'
Software developer intern: 'Built a MERN expense-splitter used by 40 hostel-mates; cut manual settlement from ~20 minutes to under 2 minutes per trip.'
Marketing intern: 'Ran the college e-cell Instagram page for 6 months; grew followers 900 → 3,400 with a 3-post-per-week reel calendar.'
Mechanical intern: 'Designed a go-kart steering knuckle in SolidWorks; FEA iterations cut part mass 18% while holding a 2.0 safety factor.'

Making it ATS-friendly and tailored to the JD

Most internship applications pass through a parser before a human sees them — company portals, Naukri, Internshala and LinkedIn Easy Apply all extract your text into fields. Parsers are literal, so give them plain structure: one column, standard headings, no tables, text boxes, images, or contact details buried inside the document's header/footer area. Then tailor. Open the internship JD, list the six to ten repeated nouns — Python, SQL, dashboards, stakeholder communication, AutoCAD, content calendar — and make sure the true ones appear in your Skills line and inside at least one project bullet, in the JD's own words. Write both forms once for abbreviations, so either search term finds you. What you must not do is dump a hidden keyword block or list tools you have never opened; the parser will not care, but the interviewer who asks a follow-up certainly will. A ten-minute tailoring pass per application beats firing the same PDF at fifty postings.

Mirror the JD's exact words: if it says 'data visualisation', don't only write 'dashboards'.
Spell abbreviations both ways once: 'Structured Query Language (SQL)', 'Computer-Aided Design (CAD)'.
No tables, multi-column layouts, text boxes, icons or images anywhere in the file.
Keep headings boring and standard: Education, Projects, Skills, Certifications, Achievements.

Mistakes that quietly sink internship resumes

Rejections at internship stage are rarely about ability; they are about avoidable noise. The biggest is the vague objective — 'seeking a challenging role in a reputed organisation to utilise my skills' tells a recruiter nothing and appears on thousands of identical resumes. Second is the tool dump: forty technologies with star ratings, most of which the student has only watched a tutorial about. Third is length — two pages from someone with no work history reads as padding, and page two usually holds school marks, hobbies and a Declaration. Fourth is the unverifiable claim; if you write 'increased sales by 40%' for a college stall, be ready to explain the base number. Then there is the small stuff that quietly kills you: a joke email id, a phone number without the country code, a GitHub link with empty repositories, tenses that flip mid-page, and a file called 'Resume_final_final2.pdf'. Fix those and you are ahead of most of the pile before anyone reads a bullet.

Weak: 'Worked on a machine learning project.' Strong: 'Built a churn model on a 10k-row telecom dataset (0.81 ROC-AUC), deployed as a Streamlit demo.'
Weak: 'Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation.' Strong: 'Third-year ECE student seeking a 6-month embedded systems internship.'
Three relevant certifications beat eleven unrelated course titles with no issuer or year.
Never inflate: 'Familiar with Java' is safe; 'Expert in Java' invites a brutal follow-up round.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is a good career objective for an internship resume?

Two lines, role-specific, no clichés. For a data internship: 'Third-year B.Tech (IT) student with hands-on Python, SQL and Power BI project work, seeking a 3-month data analyst internship to support reporting and dashboard automation.' For marketing: 'Final-year BBA student who grew a college e-cell Instagram page from 900 to 3,400 followers, seeking a digital marketing internship in content and campaign analytics.' Name the role, your single strongest proof, and what you want to learn — then stop writing.

How do I write a resume for an internship when I have zero experience?

Change what counts as experience. Two or three real projects, relevant coursework, a college club role and a couple of certifications fill one honest page. Write projects like work: context, what you built, tools, result. A semester assignment counts if you extended it — added a real dataset, deployed it, wrote tests. Hackathons, freelance gigs, NSS or NCC leadership and paid tutoring all belong. What does not belong is padding: Class 10 marks after second year, hobbies, and a Declaration line.

What is a good resume summary for a CSE student applying for a software developer internship?

Try this: 'Pre-final-year CSE student comfortable in Java and Python, with three shipped projects including a MERN expense-splitter used by 40 hostel-mates and a REST API with unit tests. Looking for a backend internship working on APIs and databases.' Three things make it work — your year and branch, one concrete artefact instead of a pile of adjectives, and the specific team you want to join. Keep it to three lines and rewrite the last line for each company you apply to.

How long should a resume for an internship be?

One page, always, at internship level. If it is spilling over, the fix is almost never a smaller font — it is cutting Class 10 marks, hobbies, the Declaration line, your third-best project, and any skill you cannot defend. Recruiters screening campus and off-campus internship pools read hundreds of these, and a tight one-pager with three strong projects beats two pages of everything you have ever done. Carry the same one-page discipline into your fresher resume format after graduation.

Should I put my CGPA on an internship resume if it is low?

If your CGPA is around 7.0/10 or above, include it — most Indian internship filters ask for it and omitting it reads as hiding. Below that you have options: show the percentage if it presents better, show your last two semesters' SGPA if the trend is clearly upward, or leave the number out and let projects lead — but expect the question and have an honest one-line answer ready. Never round 6.4 to 7; placement cells and company portals verify marksheets.

What projects should I put on an internship resume if I only have college assignments?

Assignments count if you extend them past what was graded — add a real dataset, deploy it, write tests, or handle an edge case the rubric ignored. Pick two or three that match the JD: a CSE student applying for backend shows an API and a database project, not a Photoshop poster. Examples: 'Library management system (Java, MySQL) with role-based access for 3 user types'; 'Sentiment classifier on 25k movie reviews comparing logistic regression and Naive Bayes, with confusion-matrix analysis'.

What is a good internship resume headline for Naukri or Internshala?

Headlines are the one-liner shown above your profile. Format: degree and year, key skills, strongest proof. Examples: 'B.Tech Mechanical 2027 | SolidWorks, ANSYS | Baja SAE suspension team'; 'BBA 2026 | SEO, Meta Ads, Canva | Grew e-cell page 900 to 3,400 followers'; 'B.Tech CSE 2027 | Java, Spring Boot, MySQL | 3 deployed projects'; 'M.Sc Statistics 2026 | Python, R, Tableau | Seeking data analyst internship'. Rewrite it per platform — it is the first thing recruiters filter and search on.

Should I send the same resume to every internship application?

No, but you do not start over each time either. Keep one master resume holding every project, skill and position of responsibility, then spend ten minutes per application on a tailored copy: rewrite the objective to name the role, reorder skills so the JD's stack comes first, promote the two most relevant projects, and rename the file. That ten-minute pass does more for your shortlist rate than adding another certificate to the pile.
