Copy your LinkedIn URL from the app (Android and iPhone)
The steps are the same on Android and iOS. The app does not put your URL on the profile screen itself — it lives one level in, under Contact info.
If nothing appears where the URL should be, your public profile is switched off. LinkedIn's help page says plainly that the URL will not appear if you do not have a public profile, and a disabled public profile is also hidden from people who are not on LinkedIn and from search engines.
Set a custom URL: the exact path
Changing the URL happens on the public profile settings screen. On a laptop that screen is one click from your profile. On the phone you reach the same screen through Contact info, and LinkedIn redirects you into the public profile settings once you tap your Profile URL.
A laptop is easier here, because you can see the whole address while you type it and check it is not taken. If you only have a phone, the app path below works.
The rules: 3 to 100 characters, five changes in six months
LinkedIn's help page words the rule this way: the custom URL can be 3 to 100 characters and should not contain spaces, symbols, special characters, or the word LinkedIn. Our own product knowledge base, which we corrected against the live site in September 2026, records the same limits — 3 to 100, letters and numbers, and five changes in six months. The two agree, so treat those numbers as settled.
One thing the wording does not make obvious: the URL LinkedIn assigns you at signup already has a hyphen between your first and last name. Hyphens between words are the normal shape of a LinkedIn URL. If the editor rejects what you typed, strip it back to letters, numbers and hyphens and try again.
The five-changes budget is worth respecting. Pick the name you want to keep for the next few years rather than burning changes on small edits, because after the fifth change you cannot touch it again for six months.

Before and after: what to actually pick
The default URL ends in the random string LinkedIn added to make it unique. It is not harmful, but it looks like an auto-generated account on a resume, and it is impossible to read out on a call or type from a printed CV.
Pick your name first. If firstname-lastname is taken — and for common Indian names it usually is — add the role you are targeting rather than digits. A role suffix reads as deliberate. A number reads as a fallback.
Where to paste it, and what breaks when you change it
The URL earns its keep in the places a recruiter reads before they ever open LinkedIn: the header of your resume, your GitHub profile, your email signature, and the LinkedIn field on application forms. On a resume, paste the full https address and let it stay clickable — a PDF that shows the address in text also survives being printed.
After you change it, the old link keeps pointing to you for six months unless you unlink it. That is a grace period, not a fix. Anything you can edit yourself — resume file, GitHub, signature, portfolio, the LinkedIn field on job portals — should be updated the same day, because those are the copies that outlive the six months.
