What decides a data engineer's salary in India?
Six things set most of a data engineer's package: experience, company type, city, the cloud you know, the Spark and warehouse tools you can prove, and the structure of the offer. PrepNPlaced can quote no number for any of them, because fewer than 300 postings in its India Tech Hiring Report disclosed an INR salary, and it will not estimate one. The report does show demand: data-engineer postings were 1,470 of the 17,748 it collected from 23 August to 27 September 2026 (8.3%).
| Factor | What it changes | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Experience | The level you are hired at; most postings want experience, and 52.0% of all 17,748 postings in the report were tagged senior | Read the level and the years in the posting, then ask the recruiter for the band at that level |
| Company type | IT services firms, global capability centres (GCCs), product companies and startups pay on different scales for the same title | Compare offers within one company type, and ask which internal level the title maps to |
| City | Bengaluru had 6,590 of the report's located postings, more than Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai combined; offers and rent both differ by city | Compare in-hand pay after rent, not the CTC headline |
| Cloud | Azure was named in 35.7% of 1,470 data-engineer postings, AWS in 29.0% and Google Cloud (GCP) in 16.1% | Learn the cloud your target employers name, and show one pipeline built on it |
| Spark and warehouse tools | Databricks was named in 19.1% of 1,470, Spark in 17.2% and Snowflake in 16.5% | Expect a live round on PySpark or on a warehouse, and bring a project you can defend |
| Offer structure | Fixed pay, variable pay, joining bonus, stock and benefits all sit inside one CTC number | Ask for the CTC breakup in writing and compare fixed pay across offers |
