What is the difference between a data engineer and a cloud engineer?
A data engineer is responsible for the data; a cloud engineer is responsible for the platform it runs on. The data engineer writes the SQL and PySpark that turn raw files into trusted tables and schedules them in a tool such as Airflow. The cloud engineer builds the accounts, networks, permissions and compute those jobs use, keeps them secure and available, and watches the bill. On a small team one person may do both, so read the deliverable in the posting: tables, pipelines and data quality mean a data job; VPCs, Terraform, uptime and access policies mean a cloud job.
| Dimension | Data engineer | Cloud engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Main deliverable | Pipelines and tables that are correct, on time and cheap to query | Cloud accounts, networks and compute that are secure, available and within budget |
| Daily work | Write SQL and PySpark, schedule jobs, fix failed loads, model tables | Provision resources with Terraform or the cloud CLI, manage access, fix outages, review costs |
| Core tools | SQL, Python, Spark, Airflow, a warehouse, object storage such as Amazon S3 | Linux, networking, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, the cloud console and CLI, monitoring |
| Interview rounds | SQL coding, PySpark, data modelling, pipeline design, project deep-dive | Linux and networking basics, a cloud design question, troubleshooting scenarios, scripting |
| Associate-level certifications | AWS Certified Data Engineer - Associate (DEA-C01), Microsoft DP-700, Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate | AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate (SAA-C03), Microsoft AZ-104, Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer |
