What is the difference between a data engineer and an AI engineer?
A data engineer builds the systems that collect, clean and store data so that reports, analysts and models can trust it. An AI engineer builds product features on top of models: an assistant that answers from company documents, an agent that raises a ticket, or a step that pulls fields out of invoices. A data engineer is judged on tables that are correct and on time; an AI engineer on answers that are useful, safe and affordable. The two meet at the same data. An assistant is only as good as the documents behind it, and keeping those documents parsed, fresh and access-controlled is pipeline work.
| Dimension | Data engineer | AI engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Main deliverable | Trusted tables and pipelines that reports, analysts and models read | AI features in a product: chat over documents, agents, extraction through a model |
| Daily work | Ingest from APIs and databases, transform with SQL or PySpark, fix failed loads | Write prompts and retrieval code, call model APIs, evaluate answers, watch cost |
| Core tools | SQL, Python, Spark, Airflow, a warehouse such as Snowflake or BigQuery, one cloud | Python, model APIs, a vector index, retrieval and agent frameworks, one cloud's AI services |
| Interview rounds | SQL coding, PySpark or Python, data modelling, pipeline design, project deep-dive | Python coding, design of a retrieval or agent system, evaluation, project deep-dive |
| Vendor certifications | AWS Certified Data Engineer - Associate, Microsoft DP-700, Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate | AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer - Associate, Microsoft AI-103, Databricks Certified Generative AI Engineer Associate |
| Common entry route | Data analyst, ETL or support roles, then a junior data engineer title | A move from software, data or ML work, building AI features inside an existing team |
